Single Battery vs Dual Battery — Which Is Right for You?

The single LG battery (720 Wh) covers most moderate outings. On mixed terrain in temperate conditions with AWD and PAS running, plan on 50–65 km of real-world range. For a day ride of 25–40 km or a commute under 30 km round-trip, the single pack is sufficient. Charge overnight, ride all day.

The optional second battery (Samsung 48V 15Ah, $679) doubles capacity to 1,440 Wh for 128 km rated range. In Canadian winter with dual-motor AWD draw, the single battery delivers approximately 30–40 km — the second battery extends this to 60–80 km. For serious backcountry days, hunting camp access over 30 km one-way, or any ride where turning back early because of battery level is not an option, the second battery is the correct configuration, not an optional accessory. Budget for it upfront if that is your use case.

The rule of thumb: single battery for day rides under 40 km in moderate conditions. Dual battery for full-day winter outings, backcountry access over 30 km one-way, or any situation where you need the bike to go all day without charge anxiety.

What We’d Change (Honest Take)

Zeus carries the Fat AWD 3.0 because we believe in what AWD delivers for the right rider. Here is where it asks something of you in return:

• 79.4 lbs is the honest weight. Dual hub motors, a 4.0″ fat tire build, and a 375 lb payload frame are heavy by definition. This bike belongs in a garage, a shed, a building with lift access, or the back of a truck. It is not a candidate for three flights of stairs. If weight is your primary constraint, the mid-drive options in the Zeus lineup are meaningfully lighter. If terrain is the constraint — 79.4 lbs is the price of AWD and it is a reasonable trade for the right rider.
• Hardtail rear — no rear shock. The RST GUIDE fork handles the front. The rear is rigid. The 4.0″ Kenda tires at lower pressure absorb a significant amount of rear-end terrain impact — on gravel roads, packed trails, and winter paths you will not notice the absence of a rear shock. On repeated square-edge hits over technical singletrack — roots, rock drops, embedded rocks — you will feel it on sessions over 2 hours. Know your terrain. If your trails are genuinely technical over long distances, full-suspension mid-drive options exist at a higher price.
• Dual-motor AWD draws harder on the single battery. Two motors running simultaneously pull more current than one. In cold weather, this compounds: cold reduces cell output while AWD increases current demand simultaneously. In Canadian winter at −15°C running both motors, plan for 30–40 km from the single 720 Wh pack. This is physics, not a flaw. The second battery addresses it directly. Budget for it upfront if winter range is central to your use case.
• Standard 2.0A charger. Five to seven hours for the single battery from empty. Overnight for dual. For day-ride use, this is completely workable. For back-to-back expedition days without overnight power access, plan accordingly.
• Rack, fenders, and basket are accessories, not standard. The base bike is complete for terrain and traction work. For cargo hauling and year-round Canadian riding, you will want the rack and fenders. They are reasonably priced, they fit factory mounting points, and they complete the build — but they are not in the box.

Every trade-off above is specific. Every trade-off above is honest. If none of them apply to your riding — the AWD system, the torque sensor, the Kenda fat tires, the 180mm hydraulics, the 375 lb payload, and the price leave nothing comparable in the Canadian market at this point.
